Mohi Kumar

Former News Manager, Editorial Lead, and Science Content Editor, Eos, AGU

“Randy Showstack is an accomplished journalist with top-notch writing and reporting skills. He also has a deep and nuanced knowledge of environmental and science issues and policy."

“Randy's interviewing skills cover a wide range: He can tease out a clear answer from a slippery politician, ask scientists pointed questions that nudge them into avoiding jargon, probe a lobbyist to reveal subtle angles, and draw out compelling human interest stories. When it comes to meticulous accuracy in stories, Randy is unmatched: He cares that every word he writes is verified and true. Given online news’s need for fast turnarounds, Randy’s accuracy record is a rare feat. He works hard to cultivate a wide array of sources — these sources speak to him with candor because they know and trust his accurate reporting, which is something his editors also rely on.

“I worked with Randy for many years, and his journalism skills, integrity as a reporter, and dedication to his craft are exemplary.”

Barbara Rice

Former Director of News Administration, The National Academies *

“The American Geophysical Union is known in the science media and society world as having a top-notch news operation. As its senior writer, Randy was a big part of that success for several decades. I knew him when I worked at The National Academies. He reported on studies and was dogged in his pursuit of the news. His articles were always accurate and captured the essence of findings and recommendations. We could also count on him to ask some of the best and insightful questions during our news conferences. I am happy to recommend Randy as a stellar science writer and reporter.”

Shermonta Grant

Former Production Coordinator, Eos, AGU

"At the American Geophysical Union, I had the privilege and honor of working with Randy for almost a decade as the production coordinator for Eos, the weekly newspaper for AGU. Randy's dedication, integrity, and journalistic flair – as the senior staff writer for Eos and also during a stint as its assistant managing editor – were quite impressive and consistent throughout the years. He always worked tirelessly to improve the content and look of Eos, including the online version. In addition, his strategic thinking and execution set the foundation for the international readership to receive content in an effective and timely manner. I also consider Randy a mentor to this day.”

Kathryn Foxhall

Board Officer, Society of Professional Journalists’ Washington, D.C. Chapter and Vice Chair of SPJ’s Freedom of Information Committee

“I have served many years on the board of the nonprofit Washington, D.C. Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists. Randy Showstack has been one of the best presidents we have had, out of the many I have seen. In addition to his strong project management skills and his commitment and dedication to journalism and to supporting fellow journalists, Randy’s interpersonal skills, active diplomacy and consistently upbeat attitude are remarkable given the numerous challenges and hard decisions the board and chapter have faced. Randy’s leadership has been a real boon to the chapter during his three annual terms as chapter president from 2019-2022.”

Science Communication

Suzanne Pelisson

Director of Public Relations, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution

“Randy is the consummate communications professional: well-written, accurate, communicative, and always on-deadline with any project he is tasked with. He is a very strong science communicator and writer, and has the ability to translate complex scientific material and jargon into press releases geared for the general public as well as science media. He easily gains the trust of scientists he works with, helping them to better communicate and share their research. I would highly recommend Randy for any short or long term project.”

Jacqueline Conciatore

Managing Editor and Senior Writer, African Wildlife Foundation

“In developing articles for a 40-page, 60th-anniversary legacy brochure about the African Wildlife Foundation’s landscape-scale conservation program, Randy demonstrated a remarkable ability to “learn AWF” in a short period. He absorbed a considerable amount of information quickly and delivered comprehensive and engaging stories. Our legacy documentation benefited significantly from Randy’s contribution, and I would not hesitate to recommend Randy for nonprofit editorial and storytelling assignments.”

Communication Strategy

Kevin J. Coyle, J.D.

Counsel to the President and CEO, National Wildlife Federation

“I worked with Randy Showstack for seven years at American Rivers, the nation’s principal river conservation organization. As American Rivers CEO, I was Randy’s direct supervisor for five of those years when he was Director of Communications.

“When Randy first arrived, American Rivers was a growing organization that had had only the most perfunctory public communications program. He dove right in and began to construct what turned out to be a national communications and media presence that became one of the most effective of any U.S. conservation organization. With his leadership we had regular TV network coverage, syndicated radio coverage, consistent coverage in major newspapers and wire services, other national print outlets and more. He supported feature stories, TV specials, urgent news updates, issue campaigns, and directly helped local organizations in joint efforts in their own media markets.

“As a journalist, Randy had critical insight into what aspects of our river-saving work would be of interest to reporters and the media. He was able to describe it in writing and verbally in ways that captured the essence of its significance to the public and our natural heritage. In addition to being highly intelligent and insightful in his efforts, he was and is a famously hard worker. He was fast, he was tirelessly active in outreach, he was a strong writer and he consistently followed up. Importantly, he approached other journalists with the aim of building lasting relationships with them when many other communications professionals were and are more transactional. This meant he got phone calls returned and his story “pitches” had much more willing audiences.

“Here are just a few of his successes:

“He made America’s annual 10 Most Endangered Rivers listing a national media saturation event. He wrote compelling stories about each listed river. He pitched the list directly to national outlets and organized the entire organization and local partner groups into a unified outreach team. He consistently secured coverage on all the major TV and Radio outlets, wire services and major newspapers. His relationship development approach with journalists meant that after a couple of years, they would call him to find out when the list would be published that year.

“Using his journalistic instincts, he saw how massive Mississippi River floods created an opportunity for the public to learn how dams and levees on rivers could make flooding worse. His communication efforts got the public and policy leaders to support new ways to manage flood waters and avoid development in flood-prone areas. The national profile he generated during the Great Flood of 1993 was a true phenomenon and led, among other things, to the repurposing of federal levee-building funds to actually relocate an entire town out of harm’s way.

“He made sure that American Rivers always had first-rate publications that were rich with narrative, visuals and supporting facts.

“I know that in his subsequent employment he has maintained the same insightful, energetic and hard-working approach to his work. I give Randy the strongest possible recommendation to anyone who is considering him for employment. In my many years working with thousands of professionals he rises to the very top. I am happy to discuss his qualifications.”
